Case Description
THe crown on my upper right lateral tooth came off, breaking the tooth underneath at the gumline. There is a little piece of tooth left and the root (which had a root canal) is intact. My general dentist wants to do the extraction so that he can immediately file down adjacent teeth and put in a temporary bridge. Can general dentists do this kind of extraction? I am very nervous about how little of the tooth is left and how the dentist can get ahold of it to pull it out. Can anyone explain how this is done?

Dear patient, the answer is "typically Yes". Most general dentists can handle simple extractions easily, however, on occasions, a simple extarction may turn into a surgical extarction, if the tooth fractures and there is not much to "grab on". In that case, the gum tissue would be reflected to expose more of the rooth to allow for the root to be removed. Some general dentists are also well prepared and comfortable with this type of a procedure, but it is usualy best handeled by an oral surgeon. I would suggest that you also consider the option of an implant especially if the adjacent teeth are intact, this would eliminate the need to file two perfectly healthy teeth.
