Last Cleaning: Dec. 2007
Case Description
Due to illness, family crisis and financial difficulties, I have had a temporary crown on a rear bottom molar for a few years, It was remade in Nov.2006 for a charge of $300. It just broke again and was remade this week and this time I was charged $500 which I don't have and didn't expect. I was planning on getting the permanent one done this summer but am stunned at the cost of the temporary ones. Is it normal to charge so much for a temporary crown?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I am sorry to hear of your problems. Although $500 is a bit much for a temporary crown, hopefully that dentist offered to subtract some or all of it from the cost of the finished one. Your circumstances are unusual so a fair assessment is difficult. Always remember that in parachutes, fire extinguishers, brain surgery and dentistry the cheapest price is not always the best choice. Best of luck.

A simple answer is "no", that fee for a temporary crown is excessive. My advice is to consider having the permanent crown completed, the cost of the temporary crown is included in the fee for the permanent and should not be charged separately. I honestly do not think it is wise to "waste" you funds on a temporary crown and rather invest it in the permanent crown.Best of luck,Dr. Haidar

Hi,Does look like they charged you a bit. But understand that if you walk away with the temporary for free they wasted their time. The price is basically for you to go back there and get the permanent as your permanent crown is about double what u paid and this temporary would be free if u get the permanent from the same people within the time they want you to. Normally the temp is covered in the permanent crown if u get one. Now if u go to anyone else they''''ll charge you again for a temp or a permanent cown. Clarify with your dentist what you have been charged for and till what time you can get the permanent. If they say that this price was for just the temporary alone and its not related to the permanent then that Hollywood fees!!!!!
