Case Description
I recently got the bonding removed from my two front teeth. They seem dry and dull. Will the glossy effect they had before return through remineralizing agents such as fluoride and special remineralizing toothpastes? If bonding is considered a reversible procedure then how come this happened? My teeth were really smooth and shiny before. Now I can feel the dryness against my upper lip. Does the etching solution permanently damage the "smear level" of tooth enamel? I've researched this thoroughly but can't find an answer. Or maybe do I need to give my teeth time to rehydrate? I had it removed two months ago. Please I am looking for an expert who can give to me straight. At this point I've talked to many dentists and they all say something different. I am looking for the honest truth whether it be good or bad.. Thanks

It is usually possible to polish the teeth to be indistinguishable from before bonding. This assumes there was no drilling of the teeth during the bonding. There are dentist administered polishes that should be able to restore the teeth. If the surface of the teeth was scratched during the bonding or the removal there may always be a slight difference. Bonding does not damage the teeth. Best of luck.

Teeth rehydrate within 24 hours usualy.

I should mention that removing bonding (composite) from front teeth without touching the surface of the tooth is not easy to do and VERY time consuming, however, the teeth can be polished to a smooth and glossy surface. As a colleague responded, if the teeth were roughened prior to the bonding with a drill, then it is not a "reversible" procedure anymore, and depending on how much tooth structure was removed this will determine whether the teeth will be as smooth as their original condition.
